Wooli / 無理 / 우리 is an avant-garde folk duo formed by Taiwanese pipa player Fan-Qi Wu and Norwegian drummer Michael Lee Sørenmo. Since their debut in Oslo in April 2024, the duo has performed across Europe at festivals such as Aarhus Jazz Festival, Vestafor Festival, Babel Sound Festival, and (s)Nodi Festival. Their first album is currently in development and is scheduled for release in 2026.
Wooli draws inspiration from East Asian traditional and folk music and the expressive freedom of free jazz. At the heart of the project is a desire to reinterpret and transform cultural heritage, engaging with tradition not as a fixed form but as a living, evolving force. Their music is shaped through improvisation, real-time dialogue, and a shared curiosity for sound. Often described as "a new invention," Wooli’s work challenges genre boundaries and offers a fresh sonic language—at once rooted and radically new.
